Well now, gather ‘round, partners, and let me spin ya the yarn of how this here Grand Canyon Posse came to be.
It all started with a fella named Stephen Joel Root back in the year of 2023—a man with a penchant for adventure and a dream bigger than the canyon itself.
Stephen’s holed up in Flagstaff, a town as charming as a cactus in bloom, where he spent about a decade wranglin’ stories as a television journalist for KPNX Channel 12 News, Phoenix’s NBC affiliate.
He roamed all over northern Arizona, coverin’ tales of heroics, tragedy, and pure human grit at the Grand Canyon. From search-and-rescue escapades to chronicles of canyon misadventure, even rafting the untamed Colorado River, Stephen’s storytelling took him to corners of the canyon most folks can only dream of—including a peek inside the Glen Canyon Dam.
In 2015, Stephen hung up his journalist’s spurs and started Flag Film Productions LLC, a video outfit that’s worked with more businesses in the canyon tourism game than you can shake a rattlesnake at. But while helpin’ others, Stephen noticed a mighty big gap: folks online needed real help plannin’ their Grand Canyon escapades, and what little info they could find was drier than a tumbleweed convention. That’s when he decided to blaze a new trail—one filled with education, entertainment, and enough ol’ west flair to make Doc Holliday blush.
Thus, the Grand Canyon Posse was born, servin’ up canyon wisdom with a side of cowboy charm.
And let me tell ya, Stephen’s got some delusional dreams, includin’ creatin’ a live theatre show—a rip-roarin’, shoot-em-up musical comedy to entertain travelers comin’ through these parts. Curious? You can catch a glimpse of his highfalutin’ hopes in the video below.
